Announcing AutoTrialâ„¢ -- a computer-assisted trial system, in honor of my jury
trial on Monday
Can't believe this, but I have a three-day jury trial starting Monday. The
stress today was nearly incapacitating with the clients coming in this afternoon
for prep and everyone at the office juggling many other cases. Tomorrow is a
big day for us prep-wise, with all the binders and thumb drives getting done.
For jury selection, I've spent the last 18 years using a legal pad that has
twelve packs of Post-It notes on it where I write jurors' names, as well as
notes about them. This method suffers from a number of drawbacks, such as a
lack of organization, lack of permanence, can't read my own writing, etc. That
is going to be a thing of the past this Monday when I use my AutoTrialâ„¢ system
for the first time. The jury module is conceived as a programmatic seating
chart in which I can click on any juror and type notes into my screen, which are
recorded. It will keep track of peremptory challenges as well as notes about
each juror, such as who was excused and why/when, and so on. The jury portion
of the system only apparently exists at JuryBoxApp.com, and probably also at the
highest levels of private practice currently. I'm democratizing this concept
with my Slash software system. Can't wait to show off the demo when it's ready.
Will integrate perfectly with my existing software and will be a nice addition
to my portfolio. The other trial-related stuff is going to be amazing, but I'm
going to have to focus on the jury module in order to get it done by Monday.
Haha.

Sounds like an awesome app.
Good luck to you and your staff on the trial, one more to add to your running
total to the proverbial question: HOW MANY JURY TRIALS!?

@2tierrealityTest Thanks-- this will be my 5th jury trial in eighteen
years, out of 33 total trials. Since I was second chair in the first two jury
trials I did, I need this first-chair jury trial and two more after it to be
eligible for NBTA board certification in Civil Trial Advocacy. I'm already
dual-eligible in Civil Practice Advocacy and Family Trial Advocacy...I'm taking
the NBTA exams later this year, assuming all three of these scheduled jury
trials in 2024 happen. Will be cool having board certification-- Civil Practice
Advocacy is not recognized by the State Bar of California and I can't legally
advertise that, which is why I have been waiting for Civil Trial Advocacy
qualification in order to get both that and Family Trial Advocacy at the same
time. Pretty much nobody is dual-certified in those two areas, which will be
great.

Check this out, this is after 20 minutes of editing my existing Lattice system.
This is a collaborative jury selector, so the clients will be able to take notes
and send me messages by loading this same web page and typing into it. Cool,
right?

The trial is ongoing. Jury selection was very streamlined, and we actually did
the opening statements at the conclusion of yesterday's session. The jury is
excellent, although we lost a few great ones to the other side's peremptory
challenges (and we bounced several of their great ones ourselves). My software
would work really well for this, as I expected. Just need to finish it, lol.
My opposing counsel is a pleasant enough guy, but his client is a piece of shit.
Makes for an interesting trial when the attorney is likable and the client is
not! We pick up again this morning and then hopefully conclude on Friday.

Day two concluded. We crushed it. After we played the 20-minute supercut video
of about 10 negative interactions between the parties, I could see the jury
visibly reacting. I used the large TV in the courtroom to great effect, where I
put photos and documents on the screen so they all could see them at the same
time. The best was when I used the screen to display a key photo and I was
moving the cursor around while narrating. My clients are coming across very
well, in my opinion, and the other party is not. Day three picks up on Friday,
hopefully concluding on Monday.

Day three done. Deliberations started and we expect a verdict on Monday. It
was an interesting trial, I should do a longer writeup.
