My mother-in-law's router that I installed is degraded...no regrets except that
Frontier is the worst ISP ever.
It was March 2022 when my wife and I decided to split our time between the Bay
Area and L.A., with my wife spending most of her time at my mother-in-law's
house while we awaited the arrival of our daughter, Jennifer (now two years
old). In order for me to work from my mother-in-law's house, I had to have more
reliable internet service than the crappy Frontier modem that would conk out
regularly and that was replaced at least twice. So I used an extra Netgate
appliance that I had left over from my old office, and I configured that as my
mother-in-law's router, with a mesh Wifi system so that we didn't have to wire
the house (I had tried, and failed, to wire the house for Ethernet). All was
well for two and a half years. When I got back for our Christmas visit on
Saturday, the connection to Frontier was stuck in 100BaseT mode, which should
never happen. Something is going on with either the Frontier connection or the
router. It might honestly be the router, and I didn't have time to troubleshoot
on Sunday, so I'm going to continue working on it. I am one of those people who
doesn't mind being tech support for family members...my only issue with this is
that Frontier's equipment is garbage and has never worked properly. They do
everything they possibly can to prevent us from getting a technician out to the
house, and that is not okay. If I replace the router hardware and it's still
problematic, then it's a Frontier issue and I at least will have proof. That's
my long way of saying that I'm frustrated with Frontier as an ISP.

Reply #16053331 Generally these companies just
buy the equipment from chayna and use high school graduates to troubleshoot
according to manufacturers chinglish directions. This in essence has been part
of the stock market boom since 2008

Reply #17845003 I got the new router today. It's
a drop-in replacement once I configure it, although it's much higher-end
hardware. This is the last time I'm going to have to do this, I think.

Reply #11275775 I'm declaring victory in the
internet struggles at my mother-in-law's house. The router I installed in 2022
simply gave out, which degraded the service here. The new hardware works
perfectly and has much better reliability, with a higher-performing power supply
unit, as well. Should be good for about ten years.
