Is your boiler broke or something? You may need to get a space heater then, but those can be dangerous. Its 15 degrees here, but I just came back from a long
walk. The cold is good for skin and wakes you up.

our furnace is dead, mice got into it & made a nest, the repair man 
showed it to me, i think its a lame excuse, he was young & sheltered.
my space heater is great. basement room.  we have many space heaters
upstairs for our mom.

Try to find an emergency heating program in the area. Your mom is sick and a senior. They may fix it for free or really cheap.
