I passed the alta test, but rarely are there reviews in my language. Its sad
document review may eventually get taken over by AI. I hope it never happens
entirely though. When I was in law school, old professors made it seem like
document review was hell. They were old though and probably remember box
reviews. In the modern age, it’s the easiest job in law. The only flaw is low
self hourly pay. I mostly liked it because I don’t like surprises in my day
and I enjoy doing the same thing over and over again. If the job paid at least
100-150k per year, I would see no reason to ever work at some bs firm. I get
frequent notices about reviews in my inbox and the English language ones pay
very little though. They never went back to pre covid rates. Foreign language
varies, but some do pay crazy money.
I also think DR is even better than litigation in some markets. Chicago is a
pretty blue collared city so you will never make big money suing the wealthy as
you may make in Beverly Hills where not only do people have money, but they care
about their reputations and don’t want to go to trial so they just settle. So
many PI and workers comp firms here too and such a saturated market.
If you really like this field, maybe you can go to some of the e discovery
conventions and maybe start your own doc review company. That would be crazy
work though. lol.

Starting my own doc review company would defeat everything that I like about it:
no responsibility, no worry about work off the clock, no worry at all now that
it's all remote.
What's your language - Italian? I'm certified in Italian. Love working in that
language, but there's not a lot of work. It's usually $50-60/hour, not many
megaprojects that last months and months.
The real money is Japanese, but it takes years to become literate and know
enough kanji to do doc review in Japanese. The easiest languages to learn for
the best money are Dutch ($80-85/hour), Scandic languages (Danish, Norwegian,
Swedish - all $85-90/hour), and Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia ($90-100/hour). All
are quite easy for English speakers to learn. Dutch has a decent number of
pharmaceutical reviews, Scandics have pharmaceutical and IP reviews, Indonesian
an increasing amount of FCPA matters. You can net over $4k in a good week on one
of these projects, working from home in your bathrobe, hopped up on edibles and
shooting cans from your balcony like Doctor Gonzo, in between docs.

yes my language is italian. i was worried before i took alta because many people
said it was hard and even native speakers struggled. i thought it was pretty
easy and straight forward though. i was super happy that i ended up passing.
unfortunately, not much work after that. just a few short term projects. i did
see mcdermott had a french review back in november that seemed to be long term.
i took french in high school, but remember nothing so i would never try for
french. not even for spanish even though i also took it in high school and
college. i have seen many reviews in various asian languages.
anyway now is a slow time for doc review from what i hear, but i am sure it will
pick up in the summer. i thought to learn dutch years ago. almost everybody in
the netherlands speaks english though, but yeah it may be a useful tool for doc
review.
