Illinois new anti doxing law
Illinois finally has an anti doxing law. Not without controversy as some feel it
may be unconstitutional. A man who was a serial dater is using the law to sue as
he was doxed with in a facebook group by women he dated.
I have mixed emotions. I think a right to privacy law would eliminate the need
for anti doxing laws. With that being said, this law can prevent people from
destroying the lives of others so I will support it. At the same time, should
behavior which can occur rather innocently and casually be penalized? This is
just a civil penalty though.

I think if they were just gossiping about him in the group using his first name
and a physical description, I would have no problem with that. However, when it
becomes a sort of share point for sharing addresses, phone numbers, names of
family, personal records, etc. this is how it becomes doxing or even stalking
and seems like it is done with the intent to harm the person rather than
engaging in innocent gossip. Yes, some of this info may be public, but that
doesn’t mean the average person would look it up nor would some of the info be
easily accessible without somebody bringing attention to it.
The point remains, what do these women have to gain by exposing this guy and
what’s their end game? They want to harm him by alerting others to his
behavior and engage in a type of gross speculation on his character and
motivations.

I think more in terms of laws in Europe because if I had my way, I would
criminalize certain types of things extreme doxing. Of course, people would
argue it goes against the First Amendment m. However, shouldn’t the First
Amendment be balanced with other rights? Shouldn’t the internet which wasn’t
anticipated at the time of the First Amendment be considered? Are there not
already other laws in this country which arguably go against the First Amendment
such as hate crime laws where oftentimes speech is the only offense? Google
Timothy Trybus for an example.
Again, a right to privacy law would eliminate the need for this anti doxing law.
With a right to privacy law, the man who discovers the information could just
petition Facebook/Meta or Google to remove it. The liability would be on the
social media company rather than the individual people engaging in this online
gossip.

sorry for the typos in this post, but when i type super early when i’m still
tired, it happens.
i know many will not look up timothy trybus, but he was some drunken old man in
a forest preserve who had a dispute with a woman wearing a t shirt with a puerto
rican flag on it over who could use the gazebo area. the woman claimed she
reserved it for her birthday and trybus obnoxiously started asking her if she
was a citizen of this country. he was convicted of a felony hate crime for this
behavior in Illinois and politician chuy garcia really really pressed the
state’s attorney for these tougher charges, making all these public statements
and sending emails. was the guy so wrong and likely guilty of disorderly
conduct? yes. however, a felony charge for something that was just speech and
which no racial slurs were uttered other than his stupid question if she was a
citizen, crazy. puerto ricans are also us citizens which made the rant
hilarious. my point is that certain speech is already punished in this country
and not just with civil penalties as doxing would be. trybus will be a felon the
rest of his life for his speech. doxing has led children and weaker people who
were already vulnerable to suicide. for this, i’m happy there are at least
civil penalties now for such conduct.

The enforcement would be a nightmare. Judges forced to read through JDU posts
and random emails. Meanwhile, murders and smash and grabs abound.
