whiteguyinchina from private IP /all 1980s were the peak of the world in our lifetimes Savings from deindustrializing western world were being realized, and costs were not apparent yet Movies and music reached peak before internet destroyed local culture and homoginized everything Not to mention people played instruments instead of using samples Movies of today are sequels of 1980 movies Music of today are remixes of 80s and 90s hits Michael Jackson and prince will not be replaced Rap was still rap instead of homosexual producer rap, rap thugs of 1980s were not having gay orgies* *mostly Middle class could afford a home on two salaries _reply Sun, 30 Jun 2024 06:15:39 -0700
Andy from private IP /all I'd say you are mostly correct-- the problem is that the Soviet Union still existed at that time. I would put the peak of our civilization as 1993-1994, a couple years after the dissolution of the USSR. It was the era of dialup internet and POP3 email before the Web destroyed everything. It was a fine time to be alive, though I hated being a teenager. _reply Sun, 30 Jun 2024 14:07:31 -0700
zerosugar from private IP /all I was born at the end of the 80s so obviously cannot remember anything. 90s before 95-96 obviously a blur to me, but the late 90s and 00s definitely had some charm and perhaps some left over 80s. Mall culture was still big and indoor theme parks/arcades. Internet did indeed destroy local cultures in many ways, but mid 00s 4chan memes were funny af. Ebaum's world crank calls were also cool. Modern 4chan sucks. Just storefront users, reddit tier political arguments, and gen Z "yes" memes that make Pepe seem tolerable and cool. Bring back i herd u liek mudkipz memes. _reply Sun, 30 Jun 2024 14:11:34 -0700
zerosugar from private IP /all Brooke Shields was also beautiful. Demi Moore was even pretty in 80s films. By the 90s, Demi was not cute imho. Brooke Shields aged terribly. Some actresses like Monica Belllucci look better old than young or have a certain sexiness that they didn't have, but Brooke lost all her looks. Something going on with her brows. Too much botox lowered them or something and her nose. Hard to believe somebody who was so extremely beautiful can look so basic now. _reply Mon, 01 Jul 2024 19:41:33 -0700
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all 1980s was beauty without computer filters. They just had lighting and make up. No botox. _reply Tue, 02 Jul 2024 12:58:47 -0700
zerosugar from private IP /all yes, 80s were still natural beauty. even 00s was still not heavily altered appearances. brooke was very beautiful. now she does look like she did some botox or some other surgery though and it totally altered her appearance. she looks like a different person from when she was young imho. mickey rourke is another 80s actor who heavily altered his appearance in modern times. lol at his look in the wrestler. _reply Sun, 07 Jul 2024 19:49:07 -0700
doublefriedchicken from private IP /all Ha, remember sneaking into Blue Lagoon at like 13 to see Brooke Shields. I was so out of it I thought she was the sister of the other dude on the island so I thought is was a creepy story of incest. Anyway, one of my friend's brother became friends with her in college. As far as the 80s, it was great. Lots of optmisim especially after interest rates went down. A lot of moaning at the time about the loss of manufacturing but whateever. _reply Tue, 09 Jul 2024 14:04:49 -0700
doublefriedchicken from private IP /all And yes, lots of moaning that the 60s and 70s were better because no college needed and less yuppies. Legitimate point but the economy was on fire. Also, everything began to focus on rich people (to this day). Shows in the 70s were about regular people mostly (Barney Miller, Alice, Samford and Son, etc.). Rich people were out-of-touch and usually had lots of English stuff.
