Andy from private IP /all I just had my birthday over the Labor Day weekend, and it was a reminder that I am not getting any younger. A client recently invited me to join his softball team for a local municipal league, and I did it-- hoping I don't seriously injure myself. This is middle age. _reply Wed, 04 Sep 2024 15:44:12 -0700
PeanutsandCashews from private IP /all Let me tell you a story about a softball league that my office participated in, years ago. So, this was when I just graduated from law school. Worked as a summer associate at this firm, got a permanent offer following that and went to work there immediately after graduation. (I ended up staying there only 18 months.) Anyway, so there was this "paralegal" there who felt threatened by me from basically the day I started because, I guess, she could tell that I was intelligent. She had graduated from law school, failed the bar several times in different states and given up on trying again. She managed to stay there because she was good friends with the wife of one of the named partners. She was also a Big Chungus and kind of had this sassy Big Chungus attitude. One of the other attorneys told me I should play on our softball team that played other firms. I thought it might be fun, and it actually ended up being a good time. I didn't get hurt, but I was only in my late 20s at the time so I guess there's no reason why I should get hurt. Thing was, this paralegal who had only grown more threatened by me was, for reasons unknown to me, the "manager" of our team. At the last game, Big Chungus the manager chooses to have me ride the pine, even though I'm batting over .951 (39 for 41) on the season. That's a pretty good average. Office politics, even on the softball field. _reply Wed, 04 Sep 2024 18:02:22 -0700
PeanutsandCashews from private IP /all And to continue in the softball theme, some years later ... my ex's firm was having the big annual picnic firm happy day celebration in the park, featuring a softball game. Man, I had not played in so long, I swung and missed terribly two times before finally hitting a feeble single. Father Time is undefeated. That, and you really need to practice batting if you want to keep the skill. Sucks getting older. _reply Thu, 05 Sep 2024 09:16:30 -0700
Andy from private IP /all Good story! That reminds me of the time in 2004 that I was a law clerk for an area law firm, and I played on their softball team. I freaking killed it in the first game with multiple home runs and throwing someone out at third base from right field. I was a star for a day. Then the drudgery took hold and I never matched that first softball performance. I'm completely out of shape and have not swung a bat or thrown a ball in several years. I didn't disclose that to the client when he invited me to join the team, and he did not ask either. Lol. I need to hit the batting cage this weekend to prepare for the first two games on Monday night. It's a freaking doubleheader. _reply Fri, 06 Sep 2024 01:24:39 -0700
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all Andy this is a recipe for disaster as they say it, you do realize this _reply Fri, 06 Sep 2024 06:36:25 -0700
Andy from private IP /all @whiteguyinchinaTest Yes, and I'm okay with a little disaster in my life. Haha. As long as I don't break any bones, I'm good with it. _reply Tue, 10 Sep 2024 15:42:55 -0700
Andy from private IP /all Lol, spoke too soon. I played the first game of the season yesterday and had several embarrassing moments where I injured myself. In my first at-bat, I got a hit and I was running home from third base. I ran too fast-- I fell down at full speed and either sprained or broke one of my fingers (could be a chip fracture). I also skinned my knee. The guys were laughing at me because I was wearing my Polo sweater that I got for my birthday, and I straight-up ruined it. I did get several hits and scored twice, and fielded a long fly ball. Not bad for my first effort, but I will be sitting out next Monday's game if I did, in fact, fracture my hand. _reply Tue, 10 Sep 2024 16:22:26 -0700
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all Yea that is exactly what I was talking about. Those friendly adult leagues are injury farms. Old out of shape bros with ego and a rep to live up to amongst coworkers or clients. You're lucky it wasn't soccer and you didn't blow out your knee tendons. _reply Tue, 10 Sep 2024 16:23:15 -0700
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all The guys were laughing .... You think that made you swing just a little too hard champ? _reply Tue, 10 Sep 2024 16:23:32 -0700
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all Seriously though, hope you get well soon
