whiteguyinchina from private IP, post #15998128 /all A Gen X couple bought an abandoned house in Japan for $23,000. They're restoring it as part of their retirement plan. https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-x-couple-bought-abandoned-house-japan-akiya-restoration-retirement-2024-12 Again? What's up with these articles? For many of them, it's more affordable to own an akiya in Japan than to own real estate in their home countries. Even though housing is unaffordable in their home countries, we should still be happy we can afford an abandoned house in another country? Wed, 18 Dec 2024 06:21:44 -0800
Andy from private IP Reply #12715387 Why do people feel a need to do this? I know a couple who did the same thing recently, and they claim to be planning to own the property as a rental. But why would anybody rent a house in Japan when they can find an abandoned one for less? Thu, 19 Dec 2024 07:30:22 -0800
whiteguyinchina from private IP Reply #13434533 They are from Brisbane, which is a place people are trying to retire TO. I guess if you are going to do anything you can do that in retirement. Not sure why business insider pumps these stories though. Too poor to retire in America? Don't fret, you can buy beachfront property in madagascar!
