Colombian era fucking caused syphilis outbreak in Europe, archeologists say
https://phys.org/news/2024-12-syphilis-roots-americas-archaeological-bone.html
In spring 1495, the Italian campaign of Charles VIII of France was interrupted
by an intense outbreak of an apparently unknown illness—a disease of high
mortality that quickly engulfed the whole of Europe and left its survivors with
life-changing impairments to their bodies and minds. This documented epidemic is
now interpreted to be the first historical account of syphilis.

Reply #15005434 For this to have happened, you
must have had infected men come back from the americas and then get a whole army
full of men infected. Which means there were possibly mobile brothels following
the campaigning armies around. Do not recall reading about this in western
history 1.

Reply #13817119 Isn’t it interesting how we
focus on European colonization of the Americas, Africa, and MENA region, but
many leftists leave out the colonization of European countries by other European
countries. Didn’t France take Alsace-Lorraine after WWI? Germans are missing
out on some good cheese.
With that being said, Italy was colonized by several European powers. Mostly,
the French and Spanish who were larger powers colonized us for years. You can
find French and Spanish castles throughout Italy to this day. There are Swabian
(Southern German) castles too and various other Germanic groups who colonized
Italy both in medieval times and recent times. Not to mention, leftists
frequently talk about Europeans colonization of the Middle East, but not about
Arab and Ottoman colonization throughout Italy and the Balkans.
I am not sure about syphilis. I am sadly young brought to have had far left nut
job teachers who like to make it seem like syphilis was intentionally spread by
Europeans in the Americas.
Many modern leftists conveniently leave out parts of history. Another part of
history they are uncomfortable discussing is that it wasn’t just white men in
America that owned black slaves, but many native tribes owned black slaves as
well.
Not to get off track, but that they have turned “fascism” into a synonym for
nazism is also a joke and shows an ignorance of history and political ideology.

colonization of Europe because the article starts with the line, “the Italian

Reply #12608332 I think a true account of
prostitution and sexual violence in human history would be impossible to write
due to lack of written info, but it would be fascinating. Seeing the brothels in
Pompeii really show you how different that culture was. Or how women were mass
raped by conquering armies and how that affected populations. Or how STDs
affected culture. Maybe someone wrote a graduate thesis like that already

Reply #13763182 Maybe Pompeii is still a bit like
that. Who knows? Tbh, for the longest time, I had zero interest in western
history. Much of my interests were in eastern topics. Namely, just learning
about different religions and ethnic groups in the Middle East. I guess topics
surrounding sexuality can sometimes be difficult to write about, especially in
2024. A part of western history and sexuality I do find interesting is the
castrati. I was shocked such a practice existed in fairly recent times and even
more shocked that they were considered sex symbols.
