what's more amazing is, that a state attorney would be pursuing a career change
into nursing

that is the meat and potatoes of JDU lore

wow the legal profession must really suck

Reply #11452740 being a nurse is pretty miserable
too though with their hours and the misery of being around sick people. its a
more secure position though i guess and you can do it in every country. i
wouldnt mind being a cosmetic/aesthetician nurse.

i do agree that law can be miserable and very few people have the personalities
necessary to be litigators. not to mention, the endurance and ability to deal
with stress. if you did make the mistake of entering this profession, you are
not without hope though. you can still start a business or try to get a job in
another field. things are not as hopeless as they were ten years ago. i would
never go back to school though, but thats just me. i have thought about it in
the past though. nursing is arguably more stressful than law though depending on
the type of nurse.

Reply #19478220 zerosugar, you are assuming that
all nurses care about the sick people. most don't. it's just like managing a
meat factory. some are not at all emotionally attached to the patients.

Reply #11063219 I guess I am looking at it from
my perspective. Even if I was not invested in a patient, its still depressing to
be in a hospital setting. I struggle with health anxiety and an aversion to
blood so I wouldn't be able to eat lunch or go home and have a normal day. Thats
just me though. Not all nurses deal with the sick. Cosmetic nurses who work in a
plastic surgeon's office have a pretty easy job, at least when patients aren't
complaining. Like I said, I wouldn't mind being a cosmetic nurse and just giving
botox shots. I would be curious to know the suicide rates of all professions.
Nurses are either really good or really bad and it is sad that because there is
a need for nurses, people who shouldn't enter that profession are entering it.
Nurses do on average get better benefits than lawyers. Many small firms here in
Illinois do not even offer 401ks.

I have learned as i have gotten older that you can be good at a job even if you
don't like it and like we learn in the song Midnight Train to Georgia, dreams
don't always come true.

My dream was to be an actress even though I did not care for Los Angeles or New
York which are even bigger more chaotic cities than Chicago. All the same, I did
a few things here in Chicago. Helped some of my friends who were in film school
with their student films and was on an episode of Mystery Diners on the Food
Network where I got to see how reality tv goes. I quickly saw that being an
actress is not about getting your makeup done and trying to look good on camera.
You have to be a natural. You have to appear comfortable on camera and I was not
a natural. I looked awkward, uncomfortable, bored, and shy. I had to admit this
to myself and stop wasting time. A girl I knew is still trying to act which is
insane. She looks even shyer on camera than I did. Being filmed is also not the
same as having your picture taken. Somebody can be photogenic and not look like
a natural on camera. Somebody can look weird in pics, but look amazing on camera
while being recorded.

All the same, I went to law school like many people because you can enter it
with any major. The unfortunate thing about law school admissions is there is so
much weight on the LSAT and if you do not study for it and take a prep class and
only get an average score, you are basically screwed as far as getting into a
good school. Some people just think to get licensed though and don't realize how
even for the top grads at the top schools, jobs can be limited. I met some
people through old JDU who were not well known posters. Some of them went to top
schools or at least very very good first and second tier. They graduated very
high ranking and still struggled. Most are doing ok now. They aren't making
millions. I don't know if they are happy with their jobs, but they seem
comfortable enough. I do understand though how the profession can be a huge
disappointment for people who watched law shows though and who dream to be
attorneys winning big cases and litigating in federal court or saving a client
from a lengthy jail sentence ala Johnnie Cochran. It was never my dream to be an
attorney, so I guess I see it differently. My advice to reluctant attorneys or
unhappy attorneys is to just see it as a bread making job as Kafka seen it. lol.
You may not make millions, but you can have money to survive ok and plan your
next move.

Reply #17992146 tl;dr I have met many many
lawyers who hate their jobs, but they are good at it so that sort of makes up
for some of the misery.

Reply #13236401 Working in public service is also
so different too. Early on, I interviewed to be a prosecutor in Dupage County.
It seemed like they liked me so much at the interview and I think they even
called me back for like a second interview, but ultimately I didn't get it and
maybe thats a blessing. That was the only public job I really applied for as I
sort of saw it as a recipe for stress. I wasn't about to try in Cook County.
lol.
