Police don't use this tactic for compliance checks, because it is not illegal to sell alcohol to a person 21 or older
with an expired ID. Police typically offer reduced sentence or dropped charges to minors caught with alcohol if they participate in compliance checks. It
happened to me probably a half-dozen times in the many years I bartended. Older dude in plainclothes sits at bar, orders a water, and says he's waiting for his
date. A few minutes later, kid sits at bar and orders a beer. If carded, he presents a valid ID that says he is 18 or 19 or 20. If you fail to card him, or card
him and are arithmetic-retarded and serve him anyway, you get dinged.

I only slipped up once in my life in this area, but I could have gotten nailed big time, and so easily. I'm not going
to go into details, but I'll say it happened during law school and would certainly have delayed my entry into law by at least 10 years, if not longer. Looking
back, I feel like a freaking idiot. But hey, I was 24 and I remembered what it was like being under 21. So they got me. Never happened again, which I'm quite
proud of.
