I gave up my career at 55 to move to a cabin in Finland with my best friend. I
get why locals are so happy — now I am, too.

My advice to others who want to make a big change is to take it day by day. If
you end up unhappy or it wasn't what you expected, you can always try something
different.

Reply #16440130 Some of those towns in eastern
Finland are super cozy and have really 80s vibes. I loved how they did karaoke
and thought summer sunsets at 12 am were the craziest thing I ever experienced.
If I had been there a month earlier, I think it would have always been daylight.
Helsinki was too industrial for me and sort of depressing, I really liked Kitee
though. More of a Baltic feel versus a Nordic/Scandi feel. I ended up in Kitee
because this guy was a Nightwish fan. Metal is sooooo NOT my thing, but it was
still an interesting trip. I really don't like how they eat fishy fish in
Finland though. As I get older, I realize I'm not too much of a seafood person.
I mean I like some things like sushi sometimes and calamari and baccala on
Christmas Eve, although now I opt for the unsalted cod. Otherwise, I can do
without all that super fishy seafood. I sometimes like fried cod sandwiches and
fish and chips, but the fish in Finland was just too fishy. My best meal was at
this Russian restaurant in Helsinki when I ate blini.

Reply #13096405 Another thing about Finland is
that soooo many women in Helsinki looked like models. In Kitee they had more
baltic looks and were a bit frumpier and more country like, but wow what an
interesting experience. I have never been to Lapland though and would love to
see it one day. Finland is also really foresty and no mountains it seems.

Reply #14174411 I spent some time in Scandinavia.
Prefer it to Germany and Denmark.

Reply #11674465 Eh. My dad was from Norway -
northern Norway. Nice to visit, but always with departure in mind. I don't do
high latitudes longterm.
