who died in some little bridal shop there in chihuahua. they have since removed
her though.

Reply #18086849 Mexico is one of the most
indigenous countries in the Americas. This is commonly not appreciated. Hence
things are different there. Even though it is Catholic, a lot of indigenous
elements are incorporated.
I was into the Spanish conquest of Mexico about a year ago. There was a legend
about how the aztecs became the rules of that cental lake area. Before they were
a marginal power but gradually gained strength. Then they wanted to start a war
with another group. So they arranged a marriage between the daughter of the king
of the other tribe and the aztec prince. Well after the wedding the king was
called into the temple of the war God. He was met by a priest who was wearing
his daughter's skin. That caused them to declare war.
Cannibalism was also going on. I believe the upper classes consumed the bodies
of their conquered rivals. The would go on raids to capture people for
sacrifice, and other tribes had to send sacrificial people periodically. It was
a reality totally different from what we understand.
To me Mexico still has that undercurrent. I believe the cartels practice these
ancient rituals and worship similar gods. I would not feel totally comfortable
there. Strangely being a whiteguyinchina I know my place. I am just the
whiteguyinchina. But I don't think anyone will eat me. Now in some places in
latam, I am not sure.
I met some Peruvian who claimed they could get us shrunken human heads. This
also goes on in some places.

Reply #11946385 yes mexico is very very
indigenous. peru is as well and many many speakers of quechu.i listen to an
audiobook a month and was going to listen to spare by prince harry as i have the
paper copy and sort of use it as a coffee book table, but never got around to
reading it. now i may just listen to one about olive oatman as her story
describes a time when much of the western united states was still largely
indigenous or rather only occupied by various indigenous tribes, some friendly
and some not so friendly.

Reply #10656896 I once watched a Peruvian film on
the plane called Magallanes. I felt towards the end of this film, they really
highlighted (I wonder if intentionally) a sort of divide between indigenous Peru
and European colonial Peru. I liked the character in the film had my name too.
lol.

I think the craziest thing about him is that he had zero motive to kill these
two girls. He didn’t even know them. He just met and he killed them in cold
blood for zero reason the same night he met them. His young age at the time
makes it even more shocking. That there can be such a young sadistic killer. I
never try to make sense of murders absent self defense, but sometimes there is a
reason such as the victim was an ex or they had an ongoing feud with the killer.
With Joran, it was just insane. Anybody who can remember the mid 00s followed
that case like crazy.

Reply #12263749 Likewise it’s like he became
the most famous Dutchman after Van Gogh. I think the Netherlands in general is
such a fascinating country. Small country that became so powerful in colonial
times and produced so many famous artists too especially during the Baroque era.
Peter Paul Rubens, Vermeer, Rembrandt. Joran’s own mother is an art teacher in
Aruba who studied in Rome. Imagine being her student. His brother Valentijn is
now working in the USA as a talent agent. He uses Sloot though rather than van
der Sloot.
The father who was a lawyer died of a heart attack playing tennis. I think he
wanted to protect his son, but got really nasty in the process. I have noticed
many children of attorneys seem to lack morals. I hate to generalize, but some
attorneys only teach their kids the laws rather than morals. There is this
mentality that as long as they don’t get caught, it’s ok. I know this guy
whose mom is an attorney and when I contacted her to tell her for her own
benefit about some stuff her son was doing, she was basically telling me it was
ok what he was doing as long as he is not caught.
