Poll: Should there ever be a JDU meetup, or would it be weird? Or unsafe?

I feel conflicted about this. With 64 users registered, there is enough to make
a meetup interesting. But on the other hand, if the time/date/venue were
known/announced, that would be a good opportunity for some whack job to commit a
mass shooting. There are probably 2,000 readers on the site, 99% of which are
lurkers. I would be concerned about the potential for some crazy act of
violence because I have no idea who any of the lurkers are, or what their
interests are. This adds to the fact that it's awkward interacting with online
friends in real life. I went to the CalGuns meetup in 2011 and it was so
strange seeing people I only knew from their usernames and online posts. Most
of the folks were cool, but that may be an exception considering that there was
a shared interest in pro-Second Amendment activities. Discuss.

Reply #16720942 i doubt anybody would be hurt,
but the problem is the logistics of people scattered all over the country and
workaholics who would never take a day off, not even a weekend.

I’ve met all sort of people IRL from the net. I think it’s less awkward
because people reveal more about themselves online than if you meet a random
stranger at work or in a club.

I was only 22 and escaped from my house and lied and told my family I was going
to my seasonable job just to go to Rome and meet a random Lebanese guy I met
online who I only knew because we had a mutual friend who told him to add me.
This guy convinced me to get on a plane with him to go to Lebanon. I am still
here.

I also survived Craigslist personals and met up with so many people online there
who I went to clubs with, times people I knew IRL weren’t down to club.

Reply #17439768 I suppose they have harassed
people throughout the years though, so if somebody knows that 2 or 3 certain
posters will show up, I can see some trouble go down. They harassed that guy
Keith for years after he flounced. Then there was TCPaul.

Reply #10947828 I've been to all kinds of big IRL
meetups from internet fora. Several of us from JDU gathered at squaw's
brownstone in DC years ago, and everyone survived (except my relationship with
squaw).
