United Airlines Holdings
United customers took a two-hour flight to nowhere after a pilot forgot their
passport and had to turn the China-bound plane back to San Francisco

Reply #10279052 What a screwup. And here's an
interesting thing with aviation screwups: if you call the foul on yourself,
write it all up and act transparently, and provided you weren't doing anything
truly beyond the pale and unsafe you might get some relatively minor
consequences if any. Which is good. That's actually a good safety culture.

This guy though, he committed a completely NON-aviation screwup. I'm sure the
jet was great, his airmanship was great, all that; but a diversion to San
Francisco to pick up a new crew created significant costs. Who knows, too, what
the effect of a long-delayed jet was on subsequent ops. I would be curious to
find out whether this guy is now considering a new career in accountancy.

Can't say I blame the pilot for diverting instead of landing undocumented in
China, but...ouch. Imagine if he only realized his error on the far side of the
pond.
