Pope Francis

Pope Francis has died. How sad. I remember when he became Pope in 2013. He was looking super sick the past few weeks, but I thought he would have at least
another year left. You just never know with the elderly. He will be remembered for the unusual way he ascended to the papacy and for being the first pope to
select the name Francis.

Throughout his papacy, he endured criticism by both conservatives and liberals alike who just couldn’t understand his ways. We are also living in very
divisive extremist times where people expect leaders to take hardline stances and be very vocal about it. There are sadly some people who don’t get how the
role of clergy is different from the roles of secular or democratically elected politicians. I think some conservatives expected him to be a warlord at the
border armed while some liberals expected him to perform gay marriages and make women priests. Neither would be appropriate for him or any clergy member of the
Church to do.

Pope Francis was the first pope from the Americas, born in Argentina to a family of northern Italian origins. His father was an Italian immigrant accountant.

I think the Netflix film The Two Popes was a very lighthearted cute approach to the contrast between Pope Francis and Pope Benedict.

Here are two of my favorite videos for Pope Francis that always stand out to me:

That is so awesome that he lived to see Easter and then passed. That is like Thomas Jefferson dying on the Fourth of
July (actually happened). Imagine being one of the founding fathers and hanging on just a little bit longer in order to see the birthday of the country you
founded.
