do any people spank their kids anymore?

last time i brought this up decades ago, the married young man replied to me, do u want to go to jail?

now it's obvious i've been dealing with adults who have never been spanked.  the women are over the top, hard to believe they've ever been spanked by their
parents.  

now i have had the shit beat out of me by my parents, many times.  been chased around the house by my mom who was trying to beat me with a leather belt.   once
my sisters were caught sunbathing in the nude in the backyard, they were like in fourth grade, my mom came come & pulled a tree branch off of a tree & whipped
them both with it.  funny, both of my sisters are spoiled brats to this day.

After books like A Boy Called It and the case of AJ Freund, people look down upon hitting kids. Can the child really defend themselves? 

The thing is you might not realize your strength against a child. That’s not to say that you should let a kid take advantage of you, but I don’t want to
risk hurting a child.

We personally don't spank our daughter.  All we have to do to stop her from misbehaving is threaten her with going in the crib or playpen.  And to get her to do
stuff, we offer her pieces of candy.  Problem solved.

I should add that I was spanked as a kid.  I fully deserved it, however, my parents went a little overboard with it.  The worst thing I ever did was throw a
rock that accidentally hit my cousin in the head and gave him a cut that required maybe four stitches.  Yeah, I deserved that one-- but it was enough for me
seeing my cousin hurt that I didn't need to be savagely spanked in order to not do it again.  My daughter has never done anything spank-worthy, so I haven't
crossed that bridge yet.

I won't.  My wife says she'd do it if the kid does something life-threatening, like play in traffic, which makes sense up to a certain age.
