But driving myself does really open up a country in a way that taking cabs/getting a driver never can. Sometimes I get off a highway and am in a mountain with
ancient wood houses on stilts and terraced rice paddies and it's like, damn, I'm in Real China, like the Kung Fu Panda background type. Go to some farmer's
restaurant where they kill a big river fish for you and make a soup, then make like 5 more dishes with vegetables you've never seen before, and you pay $18 at
the end and they're super grateful.

I can even take you to a countryside mock 1950s cultural revolution china restaurants, where the waitresses wear the 1950s clothing and sing patriotic songs

And even if a donkey is tied up in front of the restaurant to demonstrate freshness of the meat?
