what do you do if you feel you cannot represent somebody?
i was assigned a male client for a parenting agreement case. i just don’t feel comfortable representing this guy. he seems hostile and used the term
“bitch” to describe his ex wife several times. i’ve developed serious concerns about my ability to represent this guy effectively. should i stay on or
write a note that i cannot effectively represent him? i understand attorneys should take on a wide range of matters, but his language was triggering. not just
his use of the term “bitch,” but so many other emotionally charged rants. i’ve dealt with some difficult people, but this is a bit much.
i’m also going through some stuff now and this guy really really rubbed me the wrong way.

Declining someone who is willing to pay for the service is a tough one, but has to be done. I had a guy recently who was batshit insane and was asking me to
pay the retainer in installments...no thanks, dude. Another guy tried to re-hire me for a new matter and I absolutely hated representing him because he is not
only an abject piece of shit, but he would randomly call and ask to pop over to my office from his office, chat with me for 15 minutes, and then leave, all at
his whim. I told that guy I was too busy to take his case. Good riddance.
In the @zerosugarTest situation, I would email the guy and say his profanity
made you uncomfortable and not the right fit for his attorney. A personality mismatch is a sufficient reason to decline representation.
