Spend 2 hours searching LinkedIn for attorneys Realize virtually all attorneys exaggerate Half of them don't have any relevant experience I am cringe, cells interlinked, L Ă R P > realize retainers vary in size from small to huge What is difference between $5,000 and $15,000 retainer? Google "retainer" and end up in 13 tabs explaining What if the up-front cost is higher but the overall spend is lower? Almost no one says retainer requirement/rates on their website How does a client shop around without knowing the cost? I am cringe, cells interlinked, L Ă R P > what about customer service? Nobody says how long they take to return calls Nobody says when they are available each day Nobody says what their cell number is Cannot compare attorneys in service except on Yelp Yelp is full of ads promoting law firms I am cringe, cells interlinked, L Ă R P > what about actual legal ability? Nobody says their actual legal ability Nobody has reviews of their actual legal ability Few have testimonials from clients about legal ability Most have self-prepared glossy websites that say nothing, really I am cringe, cells interlinked, L Ă R P > hours later Comparing three options to hire Attorney A charges $5,000 up front and $500 per hour Attorney A has no website Attorney A has a mailbox for an office Attorney B charges $10,000 up front and $600 per hour Attorney B has a slick website Attorney B has a crappy office Attorney C charges $15,000 up front and $750 per hour Attorney C has a basic website Attorney C has a baller office Do I decide only on price? I am cringe, cells interlinked, L Ă R P > R E S E T - I google Attorney C He is 20 years in practice He has an extensive online presence He has 40 five-star client testimonials He charges the most up front He has his retainer agreement on his website as a PDF His c.v. is on his website as a PDF His c.v. has all 43 of his trials, what they were about, and outcome His rates and terms are all visible to potential clients He recommends selected attorneys in his Hall of Fame (!) in case client needs to shop around He has a Hall of Shame where he calls out people for shameful things I call him on his cell, he replies, cool He says spend up front higher, overall cost lower It must be a trick, no It must be cost too much, no It must be some other thing, no I am cringe, cells interlinked, L Ă R P > T R U S T Free 30-minute consultation over Zoom, same day I click Zoom link, he listens for 15 minutes He spends 15 minutes telling me my options I mention his interesting side hobbies, and he spends 10 minutes talking about them He spends 5 minutes wrapping up the conversation 45 minutes later, I feel like I got a lot for free Even though he costs the most up front, he's generous He tells me he's too busy to overbill anyone, so my overall spend will be lower He gives me his cell and texts me to confirm my number Saved me money, saved me time. I visit his office the next day and it looks just like the pictures. Happy, friendly employees. Spacious. Lots of technology. Serious art on the walls, looks like a gallery Shut up and take my money. I hire Attorney C (@AndyTest) and swipe my credit card. I am...cringe(?), cells interlinked(?), GĂĂT. > R E S U L T - two years later Trial happens in my case My overall spend is half of what it would have been with Attorney B My outcome is good He has texted me probably 1,000 times over the two years He emails me regularly and those emails aren't even on the bill He is technically proficient and highly intelligent He is actually a great trial attorney He invites me back to the office for champagne that he has been saving for my trial We clink glasses I feel like it was worth it I made the right decision on who to hire. Thu, 30 Oct 2025 17:12:27 -0700 whiteguyinchina from private IP Reply #18972292 At one point in the peak prestige of my career I was responsible for hiring law firms. I even managed to meet with Uber big law such as cravath in NYC to meet with their partners and discuss business matters. And also regional and local big and prestigious mid law. It was weird because had i not been a whiteguyinchina I would have never been in those rooms with those partners. Or if we never say never I would have had to work there for like 20 years before being in such a meeting. And here they were glad handling met and letting me know if I was ever put skiing in Utah I am more than welcome to stay at their winter house. I had some takeaways. First most law firms are huge rip offs. Whereas a small law firm can't get away with billing 100 dollars for a 5 minute phone call, a big law firm can and will. One dude tried to get me to pay a 175 dollar bill for a 15 minute conversation he had at some conference relating to our matter. 15 minites is the minimum time they bill so it could have been 5 minutes for all I know. Its the contradictory motivation of doing as much work as possible since they are working hourly to that of the client in just getting the job done. They will overkill because they are being thorough. Even though thorough means needless work. It sucks. They are akin to leeches. I could not help remembering lyrics of notorious BIG in breaking old habits Got lawyers watchin lawyers so I won't go broke, now check it So I was the lawyer watching lawyers. And indeed i believe that is the best advice. But that is really up to luck of the draw. My Chinese bosses were like well what will they give us at the end of that hour? What are the deliverables? And they could never quantify that. It voild take an hour or it could take 5. We just dont know. We need to research further. Yea ok.
