RamirezCharles E. Ramirez The Detroit News Updated Dec. 17, 2025, 4:59 p.m. ET When Lisa vonReichbauer's daughter came by her house in northern Michigan on Tuesday evening, she marveled at the sight outside. "She asked me, 'Did you see what's going on in your backyard?'" vonReichbauer said. "So I went to look and saw all of these rolls, almost like cylinders, of snow all over." "Snow rollers" covered the ground Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, at a home in Suttons Bay, Michigan. The National Weather Service calls them "snow rollers." They are formed by light, but sticky snow and winds, according to the agency. Officials said some snow rollers are formed by gravity, such as when snow rolls down a hill, but others can form on flat land and are created by winds. She said she's never spotted anything like it on her property in the five years she's lived in her house on a hill in Suttons Bay, which is located north of Traverse City in Leelanau County. "People commented and said they had seen before, but they were usually rounder," said vonReichbauer, director of Northwestern College in Traverse City. cramirez@detroitnews.com @CharlesERamirez Thu, 18 Dec 2025 12:40:00 -0800 2tierreality from private IP Reply #11088156 I swear that we would try for hours to intentionally make these as a kid (pre internet) and it never worked because they always broke apart.
