March 2023 is shaping up to be a banner month for gay animal news. Just last week, Japanese scientists announced that they were able to create baby mice from
the cells of two fathers, who may or may not be Lady Gaga stans. Now, a German research team has discovered that air pollution is turning male fruit flies gay
(yes, really).

First, a quick queer insect primer. Fruit flies rely heavily on the odor of chemical attractants called pheromones to find and mate with other members of their
species. Although most insect pheromones contain double carbon bonds, these bonds are now being easily destroyed by ozone pollution, which can “degrade insect
sex pheromones,” as reported by PinkNews, and make it more difficult for male fruit flies to distinguish between sexes. Are they bisexual kings? Research is
still pending.

However, researchers at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology did study the impact of climate change on the “global decline on insect
populations,” by exposing male fruit flies to amounts of ozone similar to that found at ground level in polluted cities for two hours.
