A 4-year-old Sterling Heights girl drowned Friday at a private athletic club, where she was swimming with other children without adult supervision, authorities
announced Tuesday.
The child had been in a pool that ranged in depth from 3-5 feet, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. She was swimming with five other children,
the oldest of whom was 12 years old.
The case remains under investigation and findings will be forwarded to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for further consideration, according to the
Sheriff's Office.
Deer Lake Athletic Club
Authorities said two adults had brought a total of six children to the pool at Deer Lake Athletic Club, on White Lake Road in Independence Township, on Friday
evening. The women placed several flotation devices in the pool, then left the kids and went to the club's bar and restaurant area, where they ordered food and
beverages.
The women were in the restaurant area for about 35 minutes while the children were in the pool area, the Sheriff's Office said. Following the drowning, the
victim's sister removed her from the pool and the two women were located.
Deputies responded to the business at about 7:30 p.m. Friday. There, they found the victim on a pool deck, where two men and a woman were performing CPR. First
responders continued to try to revive the girl and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities said investigators did not find any life preservers in or around the pool. The area included two signs noting the pool is not staffed with a
lifeguard and that children under the age of 16 are not permitted in the pool without an adult present.
"This is a horrific and tragic death that easily could have been avoided," said Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard in the release. "We always encourage that
not only is there an adult present for any children swimming activity, but one adult is specifically tasked with watching and not just in the area. We have seen
cases where children have drowned in a pool surrounded by adults."
