The hipsters in NYC, early 2000s, took bike messenger bike culture and from it prepared a distinctly stylized and, thus, inauthentic distillate. Only the heart
fractions were kept, not the tails. Much was lost this way, and nothing added. It was a travesty.

Really, not unlike blue jeans: a garment originally for use by, and identification of, the proletariat; and to which over time has been added style (and cost)
for its own sake.

A true NYC messenger bike exalted function over all else. Form and style and personalization were added of course, but all in service of the bike's use case.
Narrow bars to fit between traffic. Fixed gear for simplicity. No brakes or other components to be stolen or to break. Tools of the trade, to be sure, but also
possessions to which the rider was not so attached that the thing could not be replaced, in a sorrowless day after a crash or theft.

The hipster ones, though, were of course never really used to do an honest day of deadly work. Instead, fashion accessories. Hipsters as a whole never acquired
the finesse, the acumen, the souplesse of true messengers; and you could see it a mile away.
