HURON COUNTY, MI – A man from Michigan’s Thumb region has been charged with felony elder abuse after his mother was brought to the hospital in a severe
state of neglect and later died, deputies say.

Oval C. Jarvis, 41, of Hume Township, was charged with second-degree elder abuse on a vulnerable adult in connection to his mother’s death, Huron County
Sheriff Kelly Hanson said.

Sheriff’s deputies say the victim, Kathleen S. Holdwick, was brought in by ambulance to McLaren Thumb Region Hospital on Sunday, March 1. The 71-year-old
woman was “severely distressed and unresponsive” when she arrived, with heavily soiled clothes and deep bed sores with live maggots in her skin, the
sheriff’s office said.

The hospital contacted police, and the sheriff’s office began investigating the situation. Investigators learned that the woman had been under the care of her
son, and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to their residence in Hume Township.

While they were en route to the residence, sheriff’s deputies were alerted that Holdwick had died at the hospital.

When they arrived at the residence, the deputies reported witnessing “a deplorable scene of filth from garbage, fecal matter and urine,” with an
“unbearable smell throughout the house,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The son allegedly suggested to deputies that the conditions weren’t bad and that he was not aware his mother had gotten into such a shape, the sheriff said.

Jarvis was taken into police custody and brought to the county jail, where he was later released on bond. He has since been formally charged by the Huron County
Prosecutor’s Office.
