why is retard such a taboo word now?

a black guy once called me a retard to my face.  he was kind of a co-worker who worked in the field while i was in the office, so i saw him on pay day.  but we
were having some kind of company party on Halloween night, we were just hang around outside when he started mouthing off.  he was a cut-up and got fired a few
weeks later.  but still i can't get over it, only this guy ever said anything to me about my mannerisms, while all the white redneck types would hardly talk to
me, but i knew they thought i was weird.
