squashing ants as a little kid

my grandfather watched me for a bit as i squashed these little ants
as they ran across the concrete outside, he said to me, they're people,
don't do that.

been over forty years since, & i still don't understand him

Funny. My son's friend was just squashing ants today. I told him to stop. I did not use that line, though. I should have.  

Maybe the point was, to make you think twice about squashing them. And it seems like it worked.

There were many ant farms in Alabama when you walked down the street. I really don't remember my cousins squashing them, but we tried to avoid them as they were
quite annoying! Seems like they are so much more plentiful in hot places IIRC. Ants come out when it gets hot here in Illinois and it's funny because I was just
talking about them with my mother. You leave out any food or get one crumb on the floor, they will take over in the summer.

oh wow. lol there is a fire ant festival in georgia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_ant 

I guess their colonies do get strong with heat.

I love winter because no problems with bugs! I get scared of bugs, but I never kill them because I feel too bad. I try to put them out with a napkin. My mom
puts out ant traps/bait. Centipedes should never be killed. They protect against cockroaches and go their own way. 

Haha even google agrees- house centipedes are highly effective natural predators that hunt cockroaches, silverfish, and other household pests
