I do think many white xennials (a large number of whom were involved with Hipster culture, the types of couples who like craft beer and craft burger joints and beard clubs) with far left former counter culture parents wanted to seem open-minded just by supporting a biracial man for president or rather they were afraid of being labeled racist. Another possibility is people just felt John McCain was not a good candidate. Many elderly people even felt McCain was too old or just were brainwashed by Obama's optimism. My grandmother (silent generation) voted for Obama when we took her to vote because she couldn't bring herself to vote for McCain. She pronounced Obama's name as Bama. The Obama admin was a weird time. The recession also allowed Obama to rise. 2007 was a rough year economically. There were perhaps some nerds in Obama's following. Like I had this one nerd in class whose surname was Dunham and he was so proud that Obama's mom had that surname. I felt that was so cringe. Millennial optimism was bullshit and it should be renamed to xennial optimism. I think Trump supporters are split in 4 camps. The ones who may not be Republicans or MAGA, but they just think liberals are extremely cringe and they are. Like why would anybody vote for Democrats in the USA? They aren't helping with social benefits and welfare. They did nothing for education, student loans, or healthcare... so unless you care about some social issue or the illusion or wokeism, its pointless. I see the No Kings protestors. All earlier boomers. Not even many generation Jones amongst them. Just angry people who are rebels without a cause and think this is still Vietnam. I find it hilarious that Nixon ended the war and somehow they hated him and wanted to bring him down. lol. The second camp of Trump supporters are the wealthy obviously who have their own intersts. The third camp are just normal people who feel let down by the Dems and thought Kamala was a bad candidate. The fourth are the truly ignorant who will stand by any MAGA policy even if negative. Maybe this 4th group are anti-education and hence anti nerd because they will defend PPP loans like crazy, but fought against student loan forgiveness.
