Christa Pike

Years ago, my mom read this true crime book called A Love to Die For. We had a copy and I read it years after her. The setting of the crime is the mid 90s at a
Job Corps campus in TN. Job Corps was basically a program for at risk youth to learn training for jobs. It was filled with these really poor kids.

Anyway, there was this 18 y/o girl Christa Pike who came from a really troubled background. She was a pretty redhead. She somehow fell in love with this black
guy Tadaryl and believed this other girl Colleen who was only 19 was after him. From what I understand, their conflict was not only over the black guy. Collen
tried to have Christa expelled from the program. It was basically your typical drama between two rivals. Only it took an extremely violent turn. Christa,
Tadaryl, and another girl named Shadolla Peterson invited Colleen in the woods and made it seem like they were going to smoke weed as a peace offering. Then,
Christa and Tadaryl proceeded to kill Colleen. Shadolla was the lookout. Christa took a piece of Collen's skull. At the time, there were supposedly rumors of
satantism. Who knows how true that was?

Anybody old enough to have really concrete memories of this news story or from TN???

Christa ultimately received the death penalty after rejecting a plea deal as per her attorney's advice. He supposedly told her they wouldn't send a pretty white
girl to the death chamber. Tadaryl was only 17 when the crime was committed just shy of turning 18, so he couldn't get death. He only got life. Meanwhile,
Shadolla only got probation.

Anyway, on the 30th Christa is set to be executed. I am against the execution for several reasons. First, 30 years have passed. What is the point now? I know
thats easier said and I would probably feel different if it were my family member. However, Christa was so so young and the video of her asking to hug her mom
after being sentenced to death is just haunting. She was 20 when sentenced, but looked more like 15 IMHO. Its a haunting video. Second, there were 3 people
involved not just one. Third, while this was a terrible crime, it was not a serial killing like John Wayne Gacy style. It was also not like the torture of a
child or somebody robbing an old person's house and killing them. There was a motive here and conflict between two people. While that still doesn't excuse
murder, it can give context.

Anyway, I recognize this was a gruesome crime, but is it death penalty level especially when Lindsay Clancy who strangled 3 kids to death may walk the streets
one day???

Either way, it makes the state of Tennessee will seem medieval. When people think of Tennessee they think of Memphis, the blues, Graceland, the Smoky Mountains,
Dolly Parton, and Nashville. Does Bill Lee really want his state to be known as the state that executed a woman who was already in prison 30 years mostly in
solitary confinement??? She will also be the first woman executed in the state in 200 years. Not to mention, she was only 20 when convicted which in modern
times is one of the youngest.

These pictures of Christa are haunting.

So glad I was a nerd who kept his nose in a
book during those years. It's so easy to ruin
your life over dumb stuff that you'd forget about

This is a win/win for Lee. He didn't have to grant her clemency to be viewed as lenient on crime in the Bible Belt and he didn't have to have her be executed in
his state with all these Human Rights groups watching. Again, what she did was so terrible, but the reality is people see a 50 year old woman being killed for a
crime she committed at 18.

Either way, I am happy she was not executed. The state executing people is very unsettling. I know many did terrible things, but American prisons are terrible
punishment already.

So all the monsters on SCOTUS except for Sotomayor, Jackson, and Kagan lifted the stay. She is still alive for an hour after being administered lethal drugs. I
do not want to live in such a barbaric country. What she did was so terrible, but she is a 50 year old woman now. I do not want to live in a country that
executes a poor woman from West Virginia. The Manson chicks weren't killed. Lindsay Clancy an upper middle class Massachusetts woman murdered 3 kids and people
celebrate her. This is terrible. I can't stand Europeans, but this is why I think America is a greater evil.

After this, executions should be ended. This is barbaric. Who are we in company with? Iran and Saudi Arabia??? Lets let God be the final judge. Judges shouldn't
be playing God and have way too much power in this country.

The sanctity of life doesn't disappear because someone has committed a terrible crime.

This is a sign from God not to mess with his will.

What did TN get out of all this? I am reading foreign articles this morning and America seems like a crazy banana republic. We are the worst Western country for
human rights except for maybe some banana republics in Latin America, but I look at Joran Van der Sloot in prison in Peru and even he is not killed. Even his
living conditions aren't as bad as American conditions.

I hope this leads to the nationwide abolition of the death penalty. Its not that I don't think there are cases that deserve death, but I also believe we should
leave life and death up to God. Yes, Christa Pike did a terrible thing, but should she be our teacher? Should the state model their behavior after killers?

I love this video. This Protestant pastor in TN. He says he knows he is in the minority in the Evangelical community, but there is no humane way to kill
somebody and he thinks Jesus' execution should have been the last execution. Its nice to see some Southern Protestants practicing mercy and respect for human
life. Its crazy abortion laws are so strict, but people want to execute humans.
