We are basically a gangster nation now, so that is what gangsters would do.

I think this is terrible. I get what he did was so wrong, but he is still a human who was obviously extremely mentally ill and this is not medieval times with
public executions. I also have not studied the Fort Hood shootings enough to know whether this was due to a sympathy for terrorism or unrelated grievances. I do
not want to make assumptions, but lets say it was ideologically motivated terrorism, executing him publicly will only make him a martyr.
I just do not want to live in a country where the government is free to execute citizens even if these citizens have committed heinous crimes. Trump should
learn from former Illinois governor and Republican George Ryan. George Ryan went from being a strong believer in the death penalty to an abolitionist. Ryan had
many scandals later on, but he is a hero for what he did to commute the death sentences of all 167 remaining inmates on Illinois' death row. Its far more noble
to save a life than to take it. Pete Hegseth and Trump just want to be tough guys.
While Nidal Hassan had no wife or kids and his parents already passed away, I read he does still have two brothers and extended family. We have to consider that
somewhere out there, there are people who care about this guy. We have to respect life as a creation of God.

Because the Illinois death penalty system is arbitrary and capricious — and therefore immoral — I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death.
-George Ryan
Anyway, I think its super beautiful that this old man of rural origins who was a Republican recognized the evils of the death penalty.

George Ryan, or more probably his speechwriter(s), surely read Callins v. Collins, 510 U.S. 1141 (1994). From that case comes the original line, from Mr.
Justice Blackmun: "From this day forward, I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death. For more than 20 years I have endeavored - indeed, I have
struggled - along with a majority of this Court, to develop procedural and substantive rules that would lend more than the mere appearance of fairness to the
death penalty endeavor."
Mr. Justice Blackum continues: "The problem is that the inevitability of factual, legal, and moral error gives us a system that we know must wrongly kill some
defendants, a system that fails to deliver the fair, consistent, and reliable sentences of death required by the Constitution." With this expression I, phosita,
am completely in agreement; and I would leave this horrible apparatus to gather dust in the same warehouse where slavery gathers dust.
