whiteguyinchina from private IP /all My Chinese friend told me to move back His point is, social status is higher in China than in America. I can get invited to embassy events, have lunches with mayor's and captains of industry, and generally immediately be in a higher social strata just by virtue of being an expat WGIC Wily, discuss _reply Mon, 04 Mar 2024 20:01:07 -0800
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all It's not that I value social standing so much, besides the material benefits, it's just that the american proletariat is rather dull. _reply Mon, 04 Mar 2024 21:24:58 -0800
zerosugar from private IP /all I think rich people can be dull too, especially new money types. I just find them intimidating. Some old money types can be quirky and funny and weird. Living in the midwest, I have cool conversations with uber drivers more so than I would some guy whose life is his career. _reply Mon, 04 Mar 2024 21:44:26 -0800
whiteguyinchina from private IP /all I mean, business owners are interesting. Salary men are less so. I can relate to uner drivers because both of our lives kind of suck _reply Mon, 04 Mar 2024 21:54:36 -0800
zerosugar from private IP /all depends on the business. some business owners are people who just came across enough money to be able to start a business, but are otherwise dumb and/or have nothing interesting to talk about. America is a country of small business owners though so it's such a broad category. _reply Tue, 05 Mar 2024 04:38:39 -0800
Wily from private IP /all It's a good time man. 80% of the Murricans have left. There's all kinds of incentives the gov is giving to prestigious foreigners to come (tax breaks, rental reimbursements) this year. You can probably get like 3 jobs if you're here. They've realized they can't actually run every foreign owned company and investment with just 100% locals and 0 expats. Alternately, a short roundtrip is probably better, just to refresh your ties, pwn your Underlings, and flex that you're a globe-trotting Murrican with good Mandarin to all your rivals. No Russian Dmitri or Singaporean Cheung is gonna replace you. _reply Tue, 05 Mar 2024 05:29:17 -0800
Wily from private IP /all Remember that time we ate Brazilian BBQ in Pudong and you broke out that Portuguese with the waiter? I was impressed. I miss that. And having normal Amerikkan friends in Shanghai who aren't my underlings or random stealth Christian missionaries from Wyoming. The Old Guard expats are nearly all gone here, and the random Spanish or Croatian expat watching soccer at Cages are a poor replacement. _reply Tue, 05 Mar 2024 09:15:45 -0800
tcow from private IP /all really wish that i'd learned putonghua instead of espanol, francais, or portugues. feel like learning the euro languages doesn't do anything for me professionally. french might be useful in the future, i suppose, but spanish is too widely spoken...and portuguese is only useful for brazilian bbq places or getting laid.
