My office required me to go to an entire Dale Carnegie course years ago, not
long after I started working there. The course lasted for months. I thought most
of the material was fairly useful. Still, I think some of the material was
slightly outdated back then, and it is certainly more so today. 

Most people do like hearing their names, and calling people by their names shows
that you are care enough to learn their names and recognize them. So, it may not
work for you, but it works for most people.

the only time i heard about it was when a prick boss thought i was a loser,
as if it would help me in the cubicle farm filled with loud chatty women

I thought the course was beneficial, yes. I was just a couple years into my
career as a lawyer, and I was taking on a lot more high-profile, public speaking
roles. So, making a lot of speeches was good practice for me. It was so long ago
that I don't remember a lot of principles from the book or course other than the
thing about peoples' names. That and the memory stuff. I have an amazing memory,
anyway, so I don't really need tricks or practice, but I thought the memory
exercises we did were good.
