If the people vote to be part of Russia, Ukraine should respect their will and if they vote to be part of Ukraine then Russia should respect their will. Seems crazy that two people who are both largely Orthodox and have no major religious or ethnic differences should be fighting. I do know some of the disputed areas are largely Russian speakers and wasn’t Crimea Russian territory until the 1950s? I am not so sure about Donbas region. I just know the consequences of this war have affected countries much further west and hope it ends soon with minimal losses.
